“I wanted to wear my mommy badge with pride, but I felt like the mama bear shirts and mommy bee hats didn’t appeal to my swag.”

WHAT DO YOU DO AND WHAT LED YOU TO THIS CAREER?

I work in the financial industry by day and run a mommy clothing line, Millennial Mommy w/Melanin, by night. When I had my daughter, I wanted a community to share my journey with and reach out to for tips and tricks and a listening ear. I also wanted to wear my mommy badge with pride, but I felt like the mama bear shirts and mommy bee hats didn’t appeal to my swag. So I stepped into the space to make comfortable and fashionable pieces for the everyday mommy — the mommy who could teach a class a multitasking because let’s face it, we’re kind of masters at it. I’m so happy to have created an inclusive space and community to share the ups and downs of parenting, celebrate the superpower of motherhood, and enable mothers to do it comfortably and with style.

WHAT ARE THE NAMES AND AGES OF YOUR CHILDREN?

Kinsley Bell, 2.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT THUS FAR?

Being able to navigate and pivot during this quarantine time and still being able to design, produce and love on my brand.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF BEING A MOTHER?

Being responsible for raising an amazing and beautiful human is my favorite part. Everyday I am amazed at her ability to learn something new, soak up the world, and carve out the way she wants life to look — even at two years old! I’m not rushing her, but I’m so excited to see what an amazing person she’s going to be.

AND WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING?

Balancing time is for sure the hardest thing about being a mother. Starting up a new business and giving that 1000% while equally giving your family the same is truly a challenge. Still working on it.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE NEW TO YOUR INDUSTRY?

Study the craft, keep learning, keep asking questions. Research, research, research, and then jump out on faith. Just do it. You can’t keep waiting for the right time, because when is that?

WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR A NEW MOTHER?

Ask for help. Don't wait for your cup to be full or runneth over to ask for help. Tap into your village, early and often.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP?

Our University Winter Collection launches Saturday, November 14th, and I couldn't be more excited. The line is super cozy and comfortable and doesn’t skimp on fashion!
