Mary Lai

“The challenges and hard times are what make you stronger as you fail your way to success.”

What do you do and what led you to this career?

My name is Mary Lai, and I’m a visual artist and designer. I have a BFA in Graphic Design from Mason Gross School of the Arts, and went on to build a career in New York as a handbag & accessories designer. I relocated to Los Angeles for a job in art curation & design for a luxury home which opened the doors to my involvement in the art world. My east coast work ethic paired with my west coast lifestyle has given me the opportunity to work with some notable brands, clients, and exciting projects. With over 15 years of art & design experience I am able to do freelance work with clients while creating my own artwork and staying involved as a working mother with my two young kids.

What are the names and ages of your children?

Rylie Rose, who is almost 3 years old, and Niko Lai, who is 17 months old.

What has been your biggest career achievement thus far?

I recently exhibited my artwork and sold out of all the art in my booth! This was a great career achievement and validation for me to transition my career path from fashion accessories to art. The subject of my art is inspired by my children and focused on my career from fashion to art.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being a mother?

The love! The hugs and kisses from these tiny humans give me life!

And what is the most challenging?

Balancing everything with grace.

What is your best advice for someone new to your industry?

The challenges and hard times are what make you stronger as you fail your way to success. Work hard to pursue your passions and success will follow.

What is your best advice for a new mother?

It's gonna be okay. Scream into a pillow then get back at it. :)

What's next for you? Do you have any exciting projects coming up?

I have a few exciting art projects in the works that I hope to share soon!
