Member Spotlight: Artist Daniella Manini

Daniella Manini knows how to illustrate dreams. The talented artist and mother to happy baby Noah has a distinct imagination, which she translates into artwork through nostalgic typography, silhouettes, and color palettes. We love this FMLA member's work so much that we asked her to create the artwork for our first-ever Coachella party, #MamaMirage. She managed to whip this up in just 24 hours, bringing to life the exact vibe we were going for. We sat down with Daniella to learn more about her gift.

What is your earliest childhood memory of creating art?

On my first day of kindergarten, they made us paint something with tempera. I painted a big sun on the left of the paper and little houses under it that were sitting on a line of green grass. When my mom picked me up, the art was picked to be shown on the bulletin board. My mom walked me there to show me.

That's so sweet! Is your little one interested in art or curious about what you do?

He always climbs on my chair while I'm trying to get stuff done and stands behind me hugging my neck. He also likes to hang around while I'm printing posters and calls the printer a train!

What does a typical workday look like for you, from the moment you wake up?

Noah wakes me up, then I get him ready (to go to work with dad who's work has a daycare). I try to meditate for at least for 10 minutes. Then I sit at my desk with coffee or tea (more coffee than tea) and plan my day: make a list of things to do, respond or send emails, check the shop orders, and depending on that I either print, pack orders, or make shipping labels. I prioritize my work with deadlines per clients. I look for inspiration, I go for a run, I eat, and get back to my desk to design more. Sometimes I wish I had more time to create more of my art than just work for clients!

How would you describe your artistic style?

Retro and whimsical.

What were you doing before making art for a living?

I've always made art for a living but it's been a long time so it has evolved a lot.

What is your bestselling print of all time?

Dear Ocean and the Pure Magic collection with the San Diego beaches

What is your current favorite print in your online store?

Ancon, Ancon

What is your favorite project you've ever done?

Murals and branding for an ice cream shop has been a favorite, but I have had many great ones that I still cherish. One of them was the astrology collection at Stance Socks.

What would be your dream project that you have yet to do?

I would love to do more murals and wallpapers! And I would be stoked to do high fashion textiles.

How do you set the mood when creating art? What do you listen to?

So many things! I'm into audiobooks lately.

What is your best advice for anyone looking to become a professional artist?

Believe in your craft and know that it's a learning process. Embrace every opportunity and learn from your mistakes. Also, don't be so hard on yourself — I know it's easier said than done!
